The Shaker End Table is a perfect project for the beginner woodworker to build their skills at hand tool woodworking.

The Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky was home to 500 individuals that made up  America’s largest and best-known communal society. " The Shakers chose a peaceful way of life. They were celibate, believed in equality of race and sex, and freedom from prejudice. A quest for simplicity and perfection is reflected in their fine designs and craftsmanship, and today the term Shaker-made is synonymous with excellence around the world." - https://shakervillageky.org/history-and-restoration/

Keeping in line with the Shaker philosophy we have adapted the original "Saturday" Table into a project that anyone can build with no woodworking experience. All parts will be pre-milled and ready for final surface smoothing. You will add an elegant double taper to the inside of each leg and a bevel along the bottom edge of the table top; using nothing more than a hand plane. The aprons will be attached to the legs with simple dowel construction and glue.

Material Choice:
  • You can choose between Cherry & Walnut for a classic refined piece. We will use Tired & True Varnish Oil to enhance that natural beauty of the wood.
  • For a traditional milk paint finish, we recommend choosing poplar since it is medium hardwood that will provide lasting strength.

Course Outcome:
  • Learn the traditional skills of Layout, Marking & Measuring, Hand Planning, Hand Sawing and Hand Drilling.
  • Techniques learned will include: Double Tapered Legs, Beveled Table Top, Finishing without sandpaper.
  • You will also learn how to apply a proper oil finish or milk paint finish, depending on your choice.
